VIGNELLI QUOTES & THE VIGNELLI GRID

Recently I watched the documentary Design is One about Lella & Massimo Vignelli, the modernist design powerhouse duo that have their hands in many design outlets—graphic design, interior design, furniture design, book design, jewelry design, etc. You most likely recognize a lot of their work but had no idea it was these two generating it. My biggest takeaway from this documentary (which I highly recommend) was learning about the Vignelli Grid "For us Graphic Design is “organization of information.” There are other types of graphic design more concerned with illustration or of a narrative nature. Nothing could be more useful to reach our intention than the Grid. The grid represents the basic structure of our graphic design, it helps to organize the content, it provides consistency, it gives an orderly look and it projects a level of intellectual elegance that we like to express." - p. 40 of the Vignelli Canon (p. 21 when scrolling). It was fascinating to see Massimo sketch out book layouts based on his grids, examples: 1, 2, 3. Now I'm able to see the invisible grids (or lack thereof) in all my printed publications which is immensely eye-opening. The printed publications that have strong and balanced design follow a grid whereas the ones that are not based on a grid seem disorganized, inconsistent, and not well thought out. I'm really excited to use a 3x6 grid for the SLO Farmers' Market Cookbook. I just calculated the grids, margins, and modules for my specific book height and width. Yeeeeehawwwww. Design is real fun :) Grazie Vignelli :)
