The San Luis Obispo Farmers' Market Cookbook

Kendra is the author, photographer, food stylist, and self-publisher of The San Luis Obispo Farmers' Market Cookbook: Simple Seasonal Recipes & Short Stories from the Central Coast of California.

This debut cookbook was featured on Kickstarter’s homepage, endorsed by farm-to-table goddess Alice Waters, and sold statewide at Barnes & Noble.

With 14,000 copies sold to date, Kendra's successful self-publishing journey has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, Food52, Girlboss, Radio Cherry Bombe, and Being Boss.

The San Luis Obispo Farmers' Market Cookbook

The San Luis Obispo Farmers' Market Cookbook features 196 pages of 60 seasonal recipes and 40 short stories. The recipes are organized by seasons (15 recipes per season) and are sub-divided into five categories (3 recipes per category):

– Breakfast
– Light bites
– Lunch
– Dinner
– Dessert

The latter part of the cookbook features short stories, interviews, and profiles of farmers, food artisans, and farm-to-table chefs.

In the spirit of creating a collaborative community-driven cookbook, the majority of the recipes have been provided by the food growers and crafters themselves to showcase the true taste of the Central Coast of California.

Kendra's successful self-publishing journey has been featured in Food52, the San Francisco Chronicle, Girlboss, Radio Cherry Bombe, and Being Boss. Plus, her cookbook has garnered the attention of famed, farm-to-table goddess Alice Waters (!):

"I love the way Kendra has celebrated the farmers and the beautiful organic food they grow for us. She connects their work to the kitchen and to our taste buds in a pure and simple way—plus the photos are gorgeous.

Kendra Aronson is the vision and voice behind The San Luis Obispo Farmers' Market Cookbook: Simple Seasonal Recipes & Short Stories from the Central Coast of California. Her enthusiasm (and endless energy) made it real— from the writing, recipe testing, and food photography, to the editorial design and self-publishing.

Taking her dream from big idea to bound book took creativity and crowdfunding. In July 2015, Kendra launched a Kickstarter campaign and raised $26,714 in pre-order sales. She sold out of her first print run of 2,000 copies in just 20 days.

Now in its third print run, Kendra has sold 14,00 copies! She’s still in awe and grateful to every single supporter.

You have been such a hustler with this cookbook—you have done an incredible job spreading the word about farmers’ markets, this cookbook, and your amazing work!
— Kerry Diamond, Cherry Bombe Magazine Editorial Director & Radio Cherry Bombe Host

Your project stood out for being extra wonderful, well-executed, and really I just LOVE your project image. I chose it to feature on the Kickstarter homepage for the final few days of your campaign. If you go to kickstarter.com, you’ll see that your project is one of a few projects displayed in an editorialized homepage hero, front and center. Congrats on the feature and what should provide you a bump in visibility!

I’m the Cookbooks Buyer at Barnes & Noble. Our Vendor Manager who also handles small press, forwarded your wonderful cookbook to me. I think The San Luis Obispo Farmers’ Market Cookbook is awesome! WOW. Seeing your book is what makes my job worthwhile. Every so often I see a book from the small press department that is created by a tiny group of people that is so well done, it excites me and simultaneously boggles my mind. How did you accomplish so much with so little resources? Your book is easily as good as any cookbook from any big publishing house. Seriously. You should feel very proud of it! So much of the book is fun to look at. It’s creative in so many ways. You did a number of cool things in your book which make it stand out. And the fact you did the photography is pretty amazing. You’re a one-woman band!

Let’s begin with The San Luis Obispo Farmers’ Market Cookbook, written by the indefatigable Kendra Aronson. I’ve rarely met a more enthusiastic and proud author, and she should be. She wrote, photographed, designed, and published this gorgeous book all on her own. The recipes are not complex; most are just one page long, which makes them approachable, and are written conversationally, as if by a friend. Which is surely how you’ll feel about Kendra Aronson once you’ve worked your way through her wonderful homage to the farmers markets and people of SLO.
— Celia Sack, Owner of Omnivore Books

Three years and a successful Kickstarter campaign later, she produced the cookbook. It features 60 seasonal recipes as well as profiles and short stories about local farmers and chefs. There’s also a shout-out from her idol, Alice Waters. Aronson’s enthusiasm for all things SLO keeps her tapped into a community she loves to share with visitors every opportunity she gets.
— Deb Wandell, San Francisco Chronicle
