TEST SHOOT ASSIGNMENT
Food Photographer Mary Lagier and I teamed up on this test shoot to celebrate the limited run release of Paso Robles-based husband-and-wife winemakers’ foray into Italian aperitivo: Passeggiata! Not as bitter as Campari, not as sweet as Aperol.
Passeggiata in Italian literally means “a stroll” or “a walk,” but culturally it refers to the beloved Italian tradition of an early evening promenade. In many towns and cities across Italy, families, couples, and friends gather around sunset to walk through the piazza or main streets. It’s less about exercise and more about connection—seeing and being seen, catching up with neighbors, enjoying drinks and small bites, and lingering in the golden light before dinner.
The word carries a feeling of leisure, elegance, and community. It evokes slow living, conversation, aperitivo culture, and that effortless, stylish energy Italians are known for. Visually, it suggests warmth, sociability, and a relaxed yet polished atmosphere—less rushed, more present.
The overall energy of this tablescape feels warm, vibrant, and inviting—like a modern Italian leisurely stroll. The compositions suggest relaxed, everyday sophistication with a touch of rustic charm, where the food and beverages feel alive and natural rather than posed or overly styled.
Colors and materials are thoughtfully layered, with a mix of earth-toned surfaces, textured linens, and casual yet refined dishware that enhance the food and drinks without competing for attention. This approach creates a harmonious, lived-in aesthetic that makes each scene feel accessible yet elevated.
The lighting appears soft and natural, lending an almost sunlit, late-afternoon feel to the imagery—suggesting moments of sharing, conversation, and ease. Props and backgrounds are chosen in a way that supports storytelling: they frame the food and drinks beautifully while still keeping those elements as the visual focus.
Overall, the vibe is effortlessly stylish, tactile, and generous, striking a balance between editorial polish and genuine, everyday enjoyment. It feels like the sort of content that could live in both a lifestyle creative campaign and an editorial feature, capturing not just the products on the table but the experience around them.
