ASSIGNMENT
Creating social content for Pillsbury’s line of boxed cupcake mixes, brownie mixes, and shelf-stable frostings highlighting seasonal moments like birthdays, the Superbowl, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas. Capturing celebrating the familiarity of home baking and cooking with a fresh, modern touch.
In motion, these videos evoke a sense of authenticity and accessibility—the joy of preparing food, hands interacting with ingredients, and sequences that feel effortless yet thoughtfully lit and styled. This creates a visual rhythm that feels like lingering in a sunlit kitchen or capturing those small, satisfying moments in the process of making something delightful.
I intentionally over-baked large batches of cupcakes to ensure we had a strong selection of hero options for still photography, along with plenty of backups for the stop-motion GIFs. With motion work—especially stop motion—having multiples allowed us to select the most photogenic tops, consistent liners, and clean edges for the hero frame, while also swapping in fresh cupcakes as needed throughout the animation process.
For this type of shoot, it’s essential to bake products at multiple stages to accurately capture the full build and bake process from start to finish. When demonstrating a recipe in motion or step-by-step stills, you can’t rely on a single batch moving organically from raw batter to finished product in real time. Instead, I prepared duplicates at various stages—unmixed ingredients, partially mixed batter, freshly portioned dough, mid-bake rise, golden just-out-of-the-oven, and fully cooled and decorated—so each phase can be photographed at its visual peak.
It also protects continuity and efficiency. Rather than rushing to catch a fleeting bake window or waiting on real-time cooking, we can seamlessly swap in the appropriate stage, keeping production on schedule while maintaining a cohesive visual narrative. Ultimately, baking in phases allows the final content—whether stills, GIFs, or full motion—to feel effortless and instructional, clearly illustrating the transformation from raw ingredients to finished, crave-worthy product.
